HHPD Joins “A Child is Missing” Network

The Hasbrouck Heights Police Department announced that it has joined with, “A Child is Missing” network (ACIM), a national non-profit organization that is available to, and only activated by, the law enforcement community. [Story]



Leisure Club Christmas Party 2007

For the second year in a row, the Hasbrouck Heights Leisure Club held their Annual Christmas Party at The Cotillion in Garfield. The party was held the first week in December and was attended by more than 100 seniors. [Photo & story]



Holiday Spirit Visits Library
The holiday spirit was sweetened at The Free Public Library of Hasbrouck Heights on Tuesday, December 4th. The Library’s “Crafts-to-Share” Club combined adults and teens to join in on the fun of creating festive gingerbread trees and houses. With a lot of icing and a little imagination, everyone walked away with a masterpiece for the holidays. [Story & photo]



HHFD Brightens Holidays

Members of the Hasbrouck Heights Fire Department designed and constructed two new holiday floats at their own expense. The float on the left is a miniature HHFD Rescue Truck, complete with working smokestack, mounted on an ATV. HHFD-EMS Captain’s Award Presentation
The Hasbrouck Heights Fire Department convened December 19, 2007 for its last Emergency Medical Services (EMS) monthly meeting for 2007. During this meeting, EMS Captain Ron Botelho presented the “EMS Captain’s Award” with trophies to 9 members of the Hasbrouck Heights Police and Fire Departments for their dedication to duty for one particular emergency medical call that had a significant outcome to patient care.

A wonderful time was had by all at The Library’s 18th Annual “Leggo My Lego” Day November 10, 2007. Over 150 people were in attendance. All the children made excellent, creative designs. 5K Walk for Dyslexic Children Held on New Track
The 32nd Masonic Learning Center for Children, located at 301 Division Avenue, held its 4th Annual Hasbrouck Heights 5K Walk to Help Dyslexic Children on Saturday, October 13, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. at Depken Field (Franklin & Route 17).  This walk was the first event on the new Depken Field Track. MDA Labor Day Telethon Volunteers @ VFW Post 2007

The 42nd Muscular Dystrophy Telethon began Sunday, September 2, 2007 at 9 p.m. and ran through Monday, September 3rd until 6 p.m. Over 300 volunteers helped answer 100 phones and stuffed and mailed letters. [Photo & story]



In the Nick of Time

The Hasbrouck Heights Fire Department responded to a smoke condition at Nick’s Quick Stop, 183 Boulevard, about 11:30 a.m., Sunday, September 2, 2007. A small fire in the storage area was extinguished by the owners. The cause of the fire was undetermined and under investigation. No injuries were reported. [Photo]

It could have been a disaster. But wasn’t. On Friday afternoon, August 24th, about 2:18 p.m., a fully loaded gasoline tanker collapsed on Route 17 at the jug-handle across from White Castle.

Lenox Recovers Jet
The Aviation Hall of Fame (AHOF) received a 36 foot long, 12,500 lb. forward fuselage of a Convair 880 (N803TW) on Tuesday, August 7, 2007. It was transported from Atlantic City Airport by Lenox Corporation. Bill Lenox started working on this project with the AHOF in November 2006.

Comfort Station Dedicated
Community Access for All Committee dedicated the new comfort station in Woodland Park on August 5, 2007.  The new brick comfort station is fully handicap accessible with extra wide doors, mobility space for wheelchairs, oversized stalls and new safety lighting.

256 Attend Potter Party
At the stroke of 12:01 a.m., before a crowd of 256 eager readers at the Free Public Library of Hasbrouck Heights, J.K. Rowling’s final volume in her Harry Potter series was released to the sound of excited cheering. The long-awaited “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” is sure to be an instant classic and enjoyed for many years to come. The Library’s Harry Potter Party and Book Sale was the place to be, where Muggles and Wizard wanna-bes of all ages came in droves on July 20th from 9:30 p.m. till 2 a.m.

Rt. 17 Accident Injures Eight

On July 9, at about 2:17 p.m., the HHPD received calls of a multiple motor vehicle accident on Route 17 North.  It was reported that a car with six passengers came in contact with a tractor trailer while changing lanes, overturned, slid on its roof and was then rear ended by another vehicle that then crashed into a pick-up truck parked at Kundert Motors. The tractor trailer continued down Rt. 17 striking two more vehicles.   [Photo & story]

Since the 1970’s, the Hasbrouck Heights Police Department has conducted the "Project Kid Care ID Program" for all Corpus Christi, Euclid and Lincoln School 2nd Graders beginning in April and ending in June. About 150+ students participated this year.

The Hasbrouck Heights Girl Scouts held their 2006-2007 Bridging Ceremony at 7:00 p.m.
on June 4, 2007 in the Kiefer Auditorium located in the Hasbrouck Heights High School.

Fred Depken Retires After 75 Years
After 75 years on the job, Fred Depken is retiring from his family business at K & D Oil.
As the patriarch of the company, Fred Depken III’s memories go back to the days of coal.
It was his great grandfather, Gerhard Depken and his two sons, Frederick and Gerhard Jr., who founded the G. Depken and Sons Company over a century ago. [Story]


HHPD & WRPD Join Forces for Special Olympics
On June 1, 2007, about 9:30 a.m., the Hasbrouck Heights Police Department accepted the “Special Olympics” torch from the Lodi Police Department. Several members of the HHPD carried the “Torch” to a brief ceremony held at Shop-Rite, then proceeded up Williams and along The Boulevard past the Circle. The torch was then presented to the Wood-Ridge Police Department near the border. The HHPD run was about 2.4 miles.[Photo & story]



HHFD Memorial Day Service
Following  the Memorial Day Parade along Terrace Avenue and a Service at Veterans Memorial Park honoring Veterans, the Hasbrouck Heights Fire Department marched to the Fireman's Memorial at The Circle to honor those who served in The Department. [Story & photo]



Memorial Day 2007 Observed

Memorial Day activities began with a parade from Williams Avenue, along Terrace Avenue, concluding at Memorial Park on May 28, 2007. The parade was led by recently returned Iraq servicemen and the Hasbrouck Heights Police Department Honor Guard. Marchers included the Mayor and Council, Veterans from the VFW Post 4591 and American Legion James B. Scarr Post 106, Knights of Columbus, B.P.O Elks 1962, Hasbrouck Heights High School Band, and several Boy and Girl Scout units followed by the Hasbrouck Heights Fire Department. This was the 89th year that the citizens of Hasbrouck Heights observed Memorial Day at this monument. [Photo & story]



13th Annual 24-hour Memorial Weekend Bicycle Marathon
The Marathon was held at Depken Field starting on Saturday May 26 at 10:00 a.m. and concluded Sunday May 27 at 10:00 a.m.   About 200 boys & girls participate in over 50 teams. The Marathon was sponsored by the Hasbrouck Heights Police Department. [Story & photo]

HHFD Annual Inspection 2007

The Hasbrouck Heights Fire Department conducted its Annual Inspection at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 12, 2007. Department personnel were in full dress uniform. The equipment and new headquarters were presented for inspection and Department personnel were available to answer any questions.
The event was attended by local officials, as well as Fire Chiefs from mutual aid towns.

HH Men’s Softball League -- 50 Years of Hits
The 2007 Season Opener softball game between The Sportsmen and New Balance Teams began on a rainy Tuesday, 8:30 p.m., April 17th at Depken Field. The opening game was scheduled for Monday, but the week-end’s Nor’easter made the field unplayable. [Photo & story]




Rau-Fitzgerald 5K/Terlemezian
1 Mile Run and Family Walk 2007

The rain from one of the worst Nor’easters to hit our area didn’t dampen the spirits of the runners as they poised at the starting line. The 9th Annual 5k Run and One Mile Walk, inspired by the memory of Hasbrouck Heights teachers John Rau, Cheryl Terlemezian, and Robert Fitzgerald, was held on April 15th with registration beginning at 8 a.m. The Rau-Fitzgerald Memorial Run started at 9:30 a.m. on the Boulevard, followed by the 10:30 a.m. Terlemezian One Mile Family Walk. On April 14, 2007 at 11:11 a.m., the American Legion lowered the American Flag for the final time.  After 50 years, the Post sold its home which will be demolished and replaced by two houses.  The Post comander Michael Cahill vows to continue the Post. [Story & photo]

Brownie Troop 595 Tours NJ Aviation Hall of Fame

On March 10, 2007, Hasbrouck Heights Brownie Troop 595 toured the NJ Aviation Hall of Fame located at Teterboro Airport. The tour was led by the Museum Director, Shea Oakley, whose informative talk was highlighted with unique stories and anecdotes about NJ aviation. [Story & photo]


Firefighters Work Under Brutal Conditions

In the grip of winter’s extreme temperature of 17 degrees, with NNW winds at 17 mph, gusting to 25-35 mph, and a wind chill of one degree, South Bergen Zone II Mutual Aid Fire Departments worked a 2-alarm call at 200 Hollister Road in Teterboro for a smoke condition at 10:30 p.m. on March 5, 2007.

Andy Feintuch Memorial Wrestling Tournament
The Andy Feintuch Memorial Wrestling Tournament was held on Sunday, February 18th from 8:45 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Hasbrouck Heights High School in the new gym.

HHFD Conducts “Jaws of Life” Training

Training under freezing temperatures on Saturday afternoon, February 17, 2007, the Hasbrouck Heights Fire Department conducted rescue and “Jaws of Life” training at the DPW yard near the airport. Two donated vehicles were used in the exercise that practiced the basic techniques that are regularly used by the Department. [Photo & story]


Brownies Have Sweet Dreams

In preparation for their first overnight campout, about 72 First and Second Grade Brownies from Corpus Christi, Euclid and Lincoln Schools participated in a town-wide sleepover held in the Senior Center on Friday, February 16 from 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. They represented Girl Scout Troops 612, 613, 526, 595, 1180 and 1557. The theme was Glen Spey of Hasbrouck Heights. Glen Spey is the name of the Girl Scout Camp in New York that these scouts will attend for their first weekend camping experience when they reach Third Grade.

Brownie Troop 595 Tours Fire Department
On the afternoon of February 8, 2007, Brownie Troop 595, from Lincoln and Euclid Schools, toured the Hasbrouck Heights Fire Department. The tour began with First Assistant Chief Michael Ratkowski discussing fire safety. He discussed -- what to do if there is a fire in your home: go to a neighbor and have them call 9-1-1, do not go back into your home. [Photo & story]


Fit to Breathe
On January 31 and February 1 and 10, 2007, every member of the Hasbrouck Heights Fire Department performed their annual respirator fit test. Firefighters authorized to enter smoke-filled structures using “air tanks” test the seal of their mask annually. [Photo & story]

The Hasbrouck Heights Fire Department held their installation dinner for Chief Angelo Roccamo and the Department Officers at The Venetian on January 13, 2007. Master of Ceremonies was former Fire Chief Tony Greco. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by First Assistant Chief Michael Ratkowski and a Benediction was given by Fire Department Chaplain Rev. Fireman’s Funeral
Former Hasbrouck Heights Fire Chief Artie Knobloch passed on November 18, 2006.
During visitation at Costa Memorial Home on the evening of November 21st, firefighters from area departments paid their last respects in full dress uniform. Members of the Heights Fire Department were posted throughout and the Heights Honor Guard was posted at the casket during viewing hours. A brief service was conducted by Fire Department Chaplain Rev. NJ DOT Plans to Upgrade Route 17 Intersections

On July 26, 2006, the Department of Transportation (DOT) held a public forum regarding Route 17 at the Hasbrouck Heights Municipal Council Chambers.  The purpose was to inform local residents, officials and the business community about the proposed construction on Route 17 at the following signalized intersections: Williams Avenue, Franklin/Malcolm, Union Avenue and Highland Cross. 2008 Free Health Consultations
The Hasbrouck Heights Health Department advises residents over 18 years old that free health consultations will be held at the Municipal Building Conference Room 1 from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Consultations are held on the fourth Thursday of each month. No appointment is necessary. Scheduled dates: January 24, February 28, March 27, April 24, May 22, June 26, July 24, August 28, September 25, October 23, November 20 and December 18.   Services include: health history evaluation, blood pressure measurements, height and weight measurements, individualized counseling and education, including referral and follow-up confidential consultation with a Public Health Nurse. This program is part of the Borough's health contract with Bergen County Department of Health Services.
