Girl Scouts Gold Award Ceremony

Girl Scout Troop 519 conducted a Gold Award Ceremony at the Corpus Christi Chapel at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 4, 2003. The honorees were Julie Baum, Cristina Iribarne and Joyce Risalvato.

The program began with welcoming remarks by Kathy Van Jura (Service Unit Manager), followed by the Color Guard entrance.  A Flag Ceremony included Pledge to The Flag and Girl Scout Promise & Laws. An invocation was made by Emily Wallace.

Kathy Wallace (Advisor Troop 519), gave the requirements for the Gold Award, followed by the presentation of the pins.

Presentations were made by several community groups to include: Girl Scout Council of Bergen County, Assemblywoman Rose Marie Heck, Bergen County Clerk Kathleen Donovan, Hasbrouck Heights Mayor and Council, Corpus Christi Church, Rosary Society, Hasbrouck Heights Public Schools, Corpus Christi School, Knights of Columbus, HH Elks Club, HH Kiwanis, American Legion, HH Contemporary Club, HH Public Library & Friends of the Library, HH Police Department and VFW Post 4591.

Each of the Gold Award recipients made remarks, which was followed by the closing of the ceremony.

Program Invitation

We cordially invite you to attend a Gold Award Ceremony for Julie Baum, Cristina Iribarne and Joyce Risalvato, three Scouts who have recently earned the highest achievement in Girl Scouting, the Gold Award. They will be honored for their achievements at this special ceremony on Sunday, May 4, 2003, at 3:00 p.m. in Corpus Christi Chapel, 215 Kipp Ave., Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey.

To achieve this award these young women had to meet five requirements, which demand efficient organizational, time management, and leadership skills. They each earned four Interest Project Patches, the Career Exploration Pin, the Senior Girl Scout Leadership Award, and the Senior Girl Scout Challenge. These women put in over 30 hours on two projects for the Girl Scout Leadership Pin alone. The final step was a Girl Scout Gold Award Project, which required at least 50 hours of work. This award has taken three years to earn. As you can see, this award is not easily achieved and takes years of dedication. This award is a fitting testimonial to the many years these fine women have spent enriching their own lives as well as their community through the Girl Scout Program.  

Julie Baum has been a Girl Scout since Kindergarten, 14 years ago. She has been very active in both Hasbrouck Heights Girl Scouts and Girl Scout Council of Bergen County, as a member of Ventures 2000 Troop. Julie organized a town-wide camping weekend called "Express Yourself", as her Gold Award Project. This weekend gave 100 Girl Scouts the opportunity to express themselves through the arts including music, acting, painting, sculpting, and dance. Julie graduated from Hasbrouck Heights High School in June 2002 and currently attends Bergen Community College with plans to become an early learning teacher. She is a co-leader for a Brownie troop and is becoming a trainer for Girl Scout Leaders through the Bergen County Council.  

Cristina Iribarne has been a Girl Scout since 1990. She has earned many religious recognitions through Girl Scouting and is very involved in her school’s activities.   Her Gold Award Project involved improving a summer camp called "Camp Create". This summer camp was for inner city children and was held in Our Lady of Sorrows Parish in Jersey City, New Jersey, from 9:00am- 2:00 pm, August 5 through 16th, 2002.  Christina collected food and drink donations through her parish and town, and cooked a hot lunch every day for the campers. She also collected donations of school supplies as gifts for each camper. Christina involved many businesses and organizations in Hasbrouck Heights through her collections. She found that her interaction with the children at the camp to be very rewarding. Christina will be graduating from Immaculate Heart Academy this June and plans to attend college in the fall.

Joyce Risalvato has been involved in Girl Scouting for 10 years. Throughout the years, she has taken part in numerous activities involving commitment, teamwork, leadership, and community service. When considering her Gold Award Project, Joyce combined two of the most important parts of her life: working with young girls in the community and basketball. Using her skills and knowledge of the game along with extensive organization, planning, and people skills, Olympic Gold Basketball Camp came into being. Organizing the camp required many steps such as inviting campers, gathering equipment, planning the activities, and securing an available facility. Joyce is currently a Junior at Hasbrouck Heights High School where she also participates in many other sports and clubs. She is looking forward to continuing her Girl Scout involvement throughout High School and as an adult Scout.

The Gold Award represents years of community service, personal achievement, and true dedication to the Girl Scout Program. Your presence at this Gold Award Ceremony, acknowledging their individual accomplishments, would make this ceremony a most memorable event for these outstanding young women. If, however, you are unable to attend, we would welcome your representative or gladly arrange to have the presentation made on your behalf. Kindly provide us with a letter of commendation, a proclamation, certificate, or other form of recognition for each Scout.
