Gov. Whitman Signs NJ State Library Bill
At Hasbrouck Heights Free Public Library

Governor Christie Whitman signed a bill at the Free Public Library Wednesday, August 18 granting $45 million to libraries around the state for improvement projects.

The legislation co-sponsored by Assembly members Rose Marie Heck and Leonard Lance provides that grants will be award to municipal and county public libraries for the construction of new library buildings; expansion, rehabilitation or acquisition of existing library buildings; as well as related land acquisition and site improvement costs.

The measure will provide the $45 million in bonds to be issued by the New Jersey Educational Facilities Authority through a "Public Library Project Fund."   Municipalities and counties will be required to provide a 3 to 1 match in order to receive the capital bond funds.

Looking on during this historic moment are (L-R) Assemblyman Guy Talarico (R) Oradell, Assemblyman Leonard Lance (R) Hunterdon, Governor Whitman, Assemblywoman Rose Marie Heck and HH Library Director Michele Maiullo

Many years ago the late Ellsworth Barthen and his brother Hank planted what seemed to be millions of tulips -- on a vacant patch of "public property" along Route 46 in Hasbrouck Heights.  What a beautiful  legacy they have left us, and to the thousands of folks who have traveled through our community daily.
